geography

Valley landscape and course

The Giessen is one of the many rivers that drain the east side of the Vosges to the Ill and thus to the Upper Rhine . By far the largest part of the catchment area is in the central Vosges. It is divided into two almost equally large sub-areas: the northern, east-facing sub-area is the basin-like wide valley of the upper Giessen in the middle section, the southern, somewhat larger sub-area includes the narrower valley of the tributary Lièpvrette , which is almost straight to the northeast . The longer Liepvrette has more water at the mouth than the Giessen, so that hydrologically it is the main branch of the river system . The highest point of the catchment area is the 1229 meter high Brézouard .

The Giessen rises west of Urbeis at an altitude of about 600  m . It first flows through a narrow valley to the south-east, taking in another spring stream coming down from the Col d'Urbeis. Its course through wooded hills is initially directed eastwards, then, after the confluence of the Ruisseau de Harchingoutte, from the left, southwards and finally, from Haut d'Urbeis, eastwards again. From there he is accompanied over a longer distance by the high road D 39 . It flows through Urbeis, past the ruins of Bilstein Castle . At Bas d'Urbeis , the Ruisseau du Schnarupt , created in the Forêt Domaniale de Fochy-Urbeis , flows into it on the right . The Ruisseau de Charbes flows into Lalaye from the left . The narrow valley widens and gives space to a wide meadow. The Giessen passes Bassemberg shortly afterwards and now reaches the eponymous capital of the canton , Villé . There he picks up the Ruisseau du Giessen de Steige coming from the northwest from the left and immediately afterwards at the Place de la Gare the Erlenbach coming from the north . Flowing south-east, it passes the village of Luttenbach and then takes on the stream of the same name flowing in from the right. His path now leads through Saint-Maurice , where the Dompfenbach strengthens him, to Thanvillé . There the Kientzelgottbach coming from the northeast reaches it . He now runs south past Neubois . At the Forêt de Brischbach it flows into the Brischbach of the same name . The Giessen now changes its direction of flow from southwest to west and moves along the southern edge of the Forêt de Scherwiller . There the Aubach splits off from it, which flows into the Holzgiessen near Ebersheim . Shortly afterwards, Giessen is pushed in the direction of the significantly larger Lièpvrette . It now flows, accompanied by a wide border of bushes and trees, through an agricultural zone north of Châtenois and then south of Scherwiller , then crosses under the A35 and then reaches the northern edge of Sélestat . It now turns northeast, flows for about four kilometers through fields and meadows and finally flows into the Ill at an altitude of 164  m northeast of Sélestat.

Hydrology

At the confluence of the Giessen in the Ill, the mean flow rate (MQ) is 3.27 m³ / s; the catchment area here covers 273.0 km².

At the Sélestat gauge , the average annual runoff from the Giessen was calculated over a period of 44 years (1965–2009). The catchment area at this point, at 260.0 km², corresponds to around 95.2% of the total catchment area.

The flow rate fluctuates quite strongly over the course of the year. The highest water levels are measured between December and March. The flow rate reached its peak in February with 7.07 m³ / s. From April onwards, the discharge decreases month by month and reaches its lowest level in August / September at 0.69 m³ / s, only to increase again from month to month. The annual average value here is 3.37 m³ / s.

The monthly mean discharge (MQ) of the Giessen in m³ / s, measured at the hydrological station Sélestat.
Data calculated from the values for the years 1965–2009

At the mouth of the Lièpvrette this has a higher water flow with an average of 2.02 m³ / s than the Giessen, whose mean discharge here is 1.29 m³ / s.
