Jakob Schaller

Jakob Schaller (also Jacques or Jacobus ; born February 25, 1604 in Heiligenstein , † June 24, 1676 in Strasbourg ) was a German philosopher , Lutheran theologian and university professor .

Life

Schaller was the son of the pastor and later preacher at the Strasbourg cathedral, Wolfgang Schaller. Jakob Schaller attended grammar school in Strasbourg from 1611 and then studied philosophy. After earning a master's degree in philosophy , he began studying theology. From 1626 he then traveled to various universities in Germany and Switzerland. Starting in 1629, he took a longer stay of two years to study at the University of Jena .

Schaller followed in 1633 a reputation as a professor of practical philosophy back to the University of Strasbourg. There he was promoted to Dr. theol. doctorate and then active as a writer with a large number of disputations . In 1636, 1646, 1656 and 1666 he was also rector of the university. In 1657 he wrote a dissertation at the University of Strasbourg with the title: "Paradox of torture, which must not be used in a Christian state".

In 1637, Schaller was appointed canon at the Thomas Chapter of the city. In 1666 he became dean of the chapter and in 1674 its provost .
