Johann Zanger the Younger

Johann Zanger the Younger (* 1557 in Braunschweig ; † September 6, 1607 in Wittenberg ) was a German lawyer and university professor.

Life

Born as the son of the Braunschweig preacher Johann Zanger the Elder , he enrolled at the University of Frankfurt (Oder) in 1575 and moved to Heidelberg University in 1576 , where he studied with Hugo Donellus . Then he went to Italy and received his doctorate at the University of Basel on February 2, 1580 Hermann Vultejus , the doctor of the rights.

On August 16, 1581 he became a professor at the University of Wittenberg and assessor at the court. Later he was a member of the Schöppenstuhl , the Wittenberg consistory and the Niederlausitz regional court. After he was promoted to the first professor of law in 1594, he took over the office of senior of the law school. In addition to his legal work, he also dealt with theological issues. His works were published several times until the 18th century .

He had worked in his professorship for 26 years, in the summer semesters 1587, 1599 and 1605 he had been the rector of the academy, had been involved in various legal affairs in the Electorate of Saxony , and had earned a reputation in schools abroad.

Zanger married Catharina in 1582 (born August 28, 1556 in Thorn, † September 1, 1612 in Wittenberg), the daughter of the mayor of Thorn Matthesius Kretzsch and his wife Katharina (née Rappold). Seven children were born in this marriage, four of whom were still alive when the widow died. The son Daniel Zanger (born June 2, 1587 in Wittenberg) became Dr. jur., also Johann Zanger (born June 5, 1588 in Wittenberg). Dorothea Zanger married the lawyer Bartholomäus Reusner and daughter Catharina became the wife of Ambrosius Rhode .

He was buried in the Schlosskirche Wittenberg , where an epitaph was erected in memory .
