Parfondeval - Église Saint-Medard

Parfondeval is a northern French municipality with 142 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) in the Aisne department in the historical region of Thiérache . Parfondeval is classified as one of the most beautiful villages in France ( Plus beaux villages de France ).

location

Parfondeval is located a little outside the Ardennes Regional Nature Park at an altitude of approx. 180 m above sea level. d. M. about 54 km (driving distance) northeast of Laon or about 68 km north of Reims . The hamlets of Louvet and Les FroidMonts also belong to the municipality .

The constant population decline since the late 19th century is mainly due to the loss of jobs as a result of the increasing mechanization of agriculture .

economy

For centuries, the people of Parfondeval lived on the produce of their fields and gardens, self-sufficient ; cattle were also kept on a small scale. Later craftsmen and small traders also settled in the village. Today tourism plays an important role in the economic life of the municipality in the form of the rental of holiday apartments ( gîtes ).

history

Founding dates or other historical evidence of the local history are virtually unknown. The present church was built in the late 16th century.

Attractions

  • Most of the houses in the village are made of brick and covered with slabs ( ardois ).
  • The parish church of Saint-Medard is a brick fortified church from the 16th and 17th centuries. Century with a mighty westwork ( donjon ). The double-door west portal in the style of the late Renaissance , which is made of light limestone and whose gable field shows three shell-covered niches, in which figures may previously have stood, is to be emphasized . on the side there are snake-like decorative shapes. To the left and right of the flat-closed apse , which is now plastered, there were two further small turrets, which underlined the fortified character of the building. Church construction has been recognized as a monument historique since 1995 .
  • The Protestant church ( temple ) is a building from 1858.
  • On the outskirts there is a village pond and a three-sided closed and roofed wash house ( lavoir ) with four basins.
  • The pigeon house ( pigeonnier ) located above a gate used to belong to the farm of a wealthy landowner.
  • The place also has a small museum of old tools and household appliances.
