Montcornet is a French commune with 1,338 inhabitants (as of January 1 2017) in the department of Aisne in the region of Hauts-de-France ; it belongs to the arrondissement of Vervins and the canton of Vervins (until 2015: canton of Rozoy-sur-Serre ).

Montcornet is located about 32 kilometers northeast of Laon on the Serre , into which the Hurtaut flows here. Montcornet is surrounded by the neighboring communities of Chaourse in the north and west, Vincy-Reuil-et-Magny in the north, Soize in the east and northeast, Montloué in the east and southeast, Lislet and Dizy-le-Gros in the south and La Ville-aux-Bois -lès-Dizy in the southwest.

history

During the German campaign in the west , the 1st and 2nd Panzer Divisions had to stop at Montcornet on May 17, 1940 because both units had advanced too far on their own initiative. Almost at the same time, the Allied 4th Panzer Division under Charles de Gaulle advanced on the site and attacked the German troops. However , the attack could be repulsed by the use of dive bombers of the Luftwaffe .
