The Bevatron in 1996

Bevatron was the name of the first large synchrotron , a particle accelerator for protons .

Ernest Lawrence built the Bevatron in 1954 at the University of Berkeley ( California ). The name of the proton accelerator comes from its maximum energy of 6.2 BeV (billion electron volts), German (and internationally common today) 6.2 GeV . A large number of heavy elements that do not occur in nature could be produced with this research facility. In 1955 the antiproton was detected for the first time with the Bevatron , later the antineutron . It was later combined with the Super HILAC (a linear accelerator for heavy ions) to form the Bevalac and shut down in 1993. It was dismantled between 2009 and 2011.
