biography

Ottavio Mirto Frangipane was born on April 11, 1544 in Naples to Silvio and Laura della Gatta. He was a nephew of Fabio Mirto Frangipane .

In 1565 he became abbot of San Benedetto di Capua and from 1572 he was bishop of Caiazzo . He then became Pope Sixtus V. governor of Bologna appointed. From June 13, 1587 to April 20, 1596 he was sent to Cologne as apostolic nuncio and then to Flanders until June 12, 1606 . From 1592 to 1605 he was Bishop of Tricarico . After trying in vain to maintain the Archdiocese of Salerno, he finally became Archbishop of Taranto during his stay in Cologne on June 20, 1605 and was only able to return to Italy at the end of 1606.

In his archdiocese he had to exercise his role as shepherd more explicitly than that of a clever politician. After a thorough examination, he convened a synod, updated the ecclesiastical constitutions and finished the beautification of the bishop's palace. He died on July 24, 1612 in Taranto and his remains were interred in the Basilica of San Cataldo .
