Jost Michaels

Jost Michaels (born February 25, 1922 in Hamburg ; † June 21, 2004 in Detmold ) was a German clarinetist and music teacher , but also a pianist and conductor .

Life

Michaels was first taught on the piano and in music theory from his mother, the composer and pianist Ilse Fromm-Michaels (1888–1986). At the age of ten, he also received private violin lessons from Eva Hauptmann and, two years later , clarinet lessons from Richard Gräfe , who was the first clarinet player of the Hamburg Philharmonic State Orchestra at the time.

At the age of 20 he became principal clarinetist in the Göttingen Municipal Orchestra . After the Second World War, he was principal clarinetist in the symphony orchestra of the then Nordwestdeutscher Rundfunk in Hamburg from 1945 to 1950 . From 1949 to 1984 Michaels - professor since 1956 - taught at the Northwest German Music Academy in Detmold. His students include a. Hans Schöneberger, solo clarinetist and Hubert Hilser, bass clarinet, both Bavarian State Orchestra. As editor, he mainly devoted himself to older and forgotten clarinet music.

Michaels has toured the world as a musician, wrote several essays for professional magazines and two standard works on the clarinet. He is buried in the Hamburg-Ohlsdorf cemetery.
