Shūko Aoyama ( Japanese 青山 修 子 , Aoyama Shūko ; born December 19, 1987 in Kanagawa ) is a Japanese tennis player .

Career

Aoyama, who started tennis at the age of nine, prefers grass courts , according to the ITF .

Her greatest successes include the three double titles that she won at the WTA tournament in Washington in 2012 , 2013 and 2014 , as well as the title wins at the WTA tournament in Kuala Lumpur (2013) and the Japan Women's Open Tennis in Osaka (2014). She has also won four singles and 30 doubles titles at ITF tournaments.

In 2013 she reached her first semifinals in a Grand Slam tournament at Wimbledon . At the side of the South African Chanelle Scheepers, she lost to the pairing Hsieh Su-wei and Peng Shuai with 4: 6 and 3: 6.

Aoyama has played for the Japanese Fed Cup team since 2013 ; so far she has played 15 doubles games in the Fed Cup , of which she has won eleven.
