Jack Cooper, Baron Cooper of Stockton Heath

John "Jack" Cooper, Baron Cooper of Stockton Heath JP (* 7. June 1908 , † 2. September 1988 ) was a British trade union functionary and politician of the Labor Party , the short time member of the House of Commons as well as long-time general secretary of the union NUGMW was and in 1966 when Life Peer became a member of the House of Lords under the Life Peerages Act 1958 .

Life

Cooper was elected in the general election of February 23, 1950 as a candidate of the Labor Party as a member of the House of Commons and represented in this until his electoral defeat in the subsequent general election on October 25, 1951 the constituency of Deptford . During this time he was also the private parliamentary secretary of a minister in the government of Prime Minister Clement Attlee .

1962 he was appointed as successor to Tom Williamson General Secretary of the Union of General and Municipal Workers ( National Union of General and Municipal Workers ) and has held this function for one of the biggest British trade unions until his replacement by David Basnett 1,973th

By a Letters Patent of July 11, 1966 Cooper was, the times also magistrate ( Justice of the Peace ), was due to the Life Peerages Act 1958 as a life peer with the title Baron Cooper of Stockton Heath, of Stockton Heath in the County Palatine of Chester raised to the nobility . His introduction ( Introduction ) into the House of Lords took place on July 13, 1966 by Baron Williamson and Walter Citrine, 1st Baron Citrine . He was a member of the House of Lords until his death.

Furthermore, in 1971 he succeeded Sidney Greene as President of the Trades Union Congress (TUC), the umbrella organization for trade unions in Great Britain. He held this office until 1972 and was then replaced by George Smith .
