Shenzhen Bay Sports Center (simplified Chinese: 深圳 湾 体育 中心) is a multi-purpose stadium in Shenzhen , People's Republic of China . It is mainly used for table tennis, swimming and soccer competitions. The stadium is known for hosting the opening ceremony and numerous competitions of the 2011 Summer Universiade . The stadium has a capacity of 20,000 spectators and the arena has a further 13,000 spectators. Concerts are also held here regularly.
The international design competition for the building took place in early 2008; the preparatory work began in November of the same year. The foundation stone was laid in February 2009. The building, which was completed in mid-2011, consists of three arenas, a swimming pool, an indoor arena and a multi-purpose stadium, which are connected to one another by a large perforated steel outer skin. A 30-story office tower is also part of the complex.
The stadium is just a few minutes' walk from the Shenzhen Metro system and is close to the Nanshan Central Business District .
