Double fault

Dimensions of the tennis court

A double fault (Engl. Double fault ) is a false charge in the second charge attempt in tennis .

rule

The player has two attempts to serve. If both are faulty, this is called a double fault and the return player receives a point.

The following cases are rated as errors when serving:

  • Touching or crossing the baseline by the server (see foot error )
  • Ball goes out or does not hit the opponent's diagonally opposite service zone
  • Ball goes into the net

If the ball touches the edge of the net during an otherwise rule-compliant service and the ball then enters the service area, this is not counted as a fault - but the service must be repeated.

statistics

According to statistics at the Australian Open and the French Open, a double mistake happens after every 25th point. In Wimbledon and at the US Open after all 20 points.

Records

  • The French Esther Thebault served on March 18, 2018 in the second qualifying round of an ITF tournament in Le Havre, France against her compatriot Emmanuelle Girard, believe it or not, 42 double faults. She then lost the match in three sets with 7: 6, 4: 6 and 5: 7.
  • The Russian Anna Kurnikowa served 31 double faults in the second round match against the Japanese Miho Saeki at the Australian Open 1999 and won the game anyway. In the first round of the tournament she had already served 23 double faults.
  • With five double faults, Greg Rusedski has done the most in a single game in a row. This record cannot be "improved" (40: 0, 40:15, 40:30, 40:40, 40: A, lost)

Historic double fault

In the Davis Cup -Begegnung of Switzerland against the Czech Republic on 2 February 2013, the Swiss served Marco Chiudinelli in the longest Davis Cup match in history 7 6: and the second longest tennis match ever in the decisive fifth set with the score at 4 5, 4: 6, 7: 6 3 , 22:23 the decisive double fault from the Swiss point of view and ended this historic Davis Cup encounter after seven hours and one minute. Switzerland lost the Davis Cup match 2: 3 overall.

In the first-round encounter at the Bausch & Lomb Championships in Amelia Island in 2002 , between Luxembourg's Anne Kremer and American Jennifer Hopkins , the groundskeeper measured himself and the service line was 0.9144 meters closer to the net. As a result, the two players served 29 double faults. The match was rated normally after consultation with the WTA .

Others

Most players try to play the second service more confidently and therefore aim more in the service area than on the sidelines. But there are also situations in which the players risk more and accept a double fault on the second serve. When serving, the line judges and the referee tend to make a particularly high number of wrong decisions, since at a speed of around 180 km / h usually only millimeters decide whether a ball still touches the sideline or was outside.
