Comalcalco is a city in the Mexican state of Tabasco with about 40,000 inhabitants. The name means something like "In the house of the Comales" ("Comal" is a tortilla pan). Comalcalco is the administrative seat ( cabecera ) of the Municipio Comalcalco . Nearby is the archaeological site of the same name, Comalcalco , the westernmost temple complex of the Maya culture.

  • The Iglesia y Santuario de La Asunción, which is dedicated to the Assumption of Mary , in Cupilco, a pilgrimage site about 75 km away , was built in the 18th century in the Baroque style. While the two side towers emerge from the facade, the middle one steps back slightly. It is not known whether the colorful facade design corresponds to the original impression. The interior of the church with three aisles is covered by an open wooden roof structure.
