Codefellas is an American animated satirical series written by David Rees , produced in 2013 and distributed by the online magazine Wired . Codefellas addresses the generation conflict surrounding the digital upheaval within the NSA intelligence service .

action

Nicole Winters works for a "special project" - the electronic surveillance of the general public - of the NSA and is assigned to the veteran Henry Topple. This is a bungler and causes desperation in winters through his ignorance. Over the 12 episodes, various aspects of the digital revolution are thematized and the incompetence of parts of society and authorities are shown.

characters

Special Agent Henry Topple

Topple is an agent of the past generation, gray-haired and unrelated to the digital world. On the other hand, he is very good at the classic methods of intelligence gathering - he considers them to be far superior. He forgets the simple password of his e-mail inbox for the already antiquated GeoCities service , "Password123", and does not recognize the term "e-vite" (from invite "invitation") as a modern mutilation of the original word . Instead, he considers statements about the details of the party, which the invitation is about, to be a direct threat. In episode 1 he introduces himself as a mentor Nicole Winters, but it turns out that she is superior to him in large parts of official matters, so she makes a note on him several times due to his behavior. Topple shows signs of paranoia , but also occasionally reveals bizarre humor: Upon Nicole's confirmation that her new colleagues are nice, he asks their names to “take care of them personally” (original: “ I will deal with them personally. ”)

Nicole Winters

The young hacker , accurate in her actions and appearance, is still inexperienced in the industry and environment. In Agent Topple she fights around trivialities in bizarre dialogues. She is able to gain access to a website within a minute. In episode 4, it is revealed that she is Supervisor Topples.

background

Codefellas was started a few weeks before Edward Snowden's first publication and could only have guessed the scope of the topic of surveillance in computer-mediated communication and the influence on the modern information society .

With regard to the surveillance and espionage affair in 2013 , the response was particularly great in the English-speaking blogosphere as well as the entire network culture .
