Franklin County is a county in the state of North Carolina in the United States . The administrative seat ( County Seat ) is Louisburg , which after Louis XVI. who was named King of France .

The county is located northeast of the geographic center of North Carolina, is about 25 miles to the north from Virginia and has an area of 1,281 square kilometers, of which 7 square kilometers are water. It is bordered clockwise by the following counties: Warren Counties , Nash Counties , Wake Counties , Granville Counties , and Vance Counties .
Franklin County is divided into ten townships : Cedar Rock, Cypress Creek, Bunn, Franklinton, Gold Mine, Harris, Hayesville, Louisburg, Sandy Creek, and Youngsville.

Franklin County was formed in 1779 from parts of what was formerly Bute County. It was named after the politician Benjamin Franklin .

As of the 2000 census , Franklin County had 47,260 people in 17,843 households and 12,882 families. The population density was 37 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 66.00 percent white, 30.03 percent African American, 0.44 percent Native American, 0.30 percent Asian, 0.04 percent of residents from the Pacific island area and 2.29 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 0.91 percent were descended from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race was 4.44 percent of the population.
Of the 17,843 households, 33.5 percent had children under the age of 18 living with them. 54.5 percent of these were married couples living together, 13.1 percent were single mothers and 27.8 percent were non-families. 23.5 percent were single households and 8.4 percent had people 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.58 and the average family size was 3.03.
25.3 percent of the population were under 18 years old. 8.4 percent between 18 and 24 years of age, 32.4 percent between 25 and 44 years of age, 22.9 percent between 45 and 64, and 11.0 percent were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 36 years. For all females there were 97.4 males. For all women aged 18 or over there were 95.4 men.
The median income for a household in the county is $ 38,968, and the median income for a family is $ 44,540. Males had a median income of $ 31,543 versus $ 24,568 for females. The per capita income was $ 17,562. 12.6 percent of the population and 10.0 percent of families are below the poverty line. 16.1 percent of them are children and young people under 18 years of age and 16.7 percent are 65 years of age or older.
