Forsyth County is a county in the state of North Carolina in the United States . The county seat is Winston-Salem , named after Joseph Winston , a major during the American Revolutionary War .

The county is located in the mid-northwest, about 25 miles north of Virginia , and covers an area of 1,069 square kilometers, of which 9 square kilometers are water. It is bordered in a clockwise direction by Stokes County , Guilford County , Davidson County , Davie County , Yadkin County, and Surry County .
Forsyth County is divided into 14 townships : Abbotts Creek, Belews Creek, Bethania, Broadbay, Clemmons, Kernersville, Lewisville, Middle Fork, Old Richmond, Salem Chapel, South Fork, Vienna, Walkertown and Winston-Salem.
history
Forsyth County was formed in 1849 from parts of Stokes County. It was named after Colonel Benjamin Forsyth , a large landowner in the area who was killed in the British-American War .
There are four National Historic Landmarks in the county , three of which are Historic Districts . A total of 97 buildings and sites in the county are registered in the National Register of Historic Places (as of March 2, 2018).

According to the 2000 census , Forsyth County had a population of 306,067. Of these, 9,949 people lived in collective accommodation, the other residents lived in 123,851 households and 81,741 families. The population density was 289 inhabitants per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 68.47 percent white, 25.61 percent African American, 0.30 percent Native American, 1.04 percent Asian, 0.03 percent of residents from the Pacific island area and 3.25 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 1.30 percent were descended from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 6.40 percent of the population.
Of the 123,851 households, 30.5 percent had children under the age of 18 living with them. 48.9 percent of these were married couples living together, 13.5 percent were single mothers and 34.0 percent were non-families. 28.9 percent were single households and 9.3 percent had people 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.39 and the average family size was 2.94.
23.9 percent of the population were under 18 years old. 9.6 percent between 18 and 24 years of age, 31.1 percent between 25 and 44 years of age, 22.8 percent between 45 and 64, and 12.6 percent were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 36 years. For all females there were 91.5 males. For all women aged 18 or over there were 87.4 men.
The median income for a household in the 42,097 US $ and the median income for a family was $ 52,032. Males had a median income of $ 36,158 versus $ 27,319 for females. The per capita income was $ 23,023. 11.0 percent of the population and 7.9 percent of families are below the poverty line. These included 15.1 percent of children and adolescents under the age of 18 and 9.7 percent of those aged 65 and over.
