Polk County is a county in the state of North Carolina in the United States . The county seat is Columbus .
geography
The county is located in west-central North Carolina, bordering South Carolina to the south and has an area of 618 square kilometers, of which 2 square kilometers are water. It is bordered in a clockwise direction by the following counties: Rutherford County and Henderson County .
Polk County is divided into six townships : Columbus, Cooper Gap, Green Creek, Saluda, Tryon, and White Oak.
history
Polk County was formed on January 18, 1847 from parts of Henderson County and Rutherford County. It was named after William Polk , a colonel in the American Revolutionary War .
A total of 21 buildings and sites in the county are registered in the National Register of Historic Places (as of March 14, 2018).

According to the 2000 census , Polk County had 18,324 people in 7,908 households and 5,337 families. The population density was 30 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 92.26 percent white, 5.89 percent African American, 0.19 percent Native American, 0.24 percent Asian, 0.03 percent of residents from the Pacific island area and 0.63 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 0.76 percent were descended from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race was 3.01 percent of the population.
Of the 7,908 households, 23.5 percent had children under the age of 18 living with them. 56.3 percent of them were married couples living together, 7.9 percent were single mothers and 32.5 percent were non-families. 28.9 percent were single households and 15.0 percent had people 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.28 and the average family size was 2.78 people.
20.1 percent of the population were under 18 years old. 5.8 percent between 18 and 24 years of age, 24.2 percent between 25 and 44 years of age, 26.3 percent between 45 and 64, and 23.6 percent were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 45 years. For all females there were 90.2 males. For all women aged 18 years or over, there were 87.1 men.
The median income for a household in the city is $ 36,259, and the median income for a family is $ 45,096. Males had a median income of $ 29,375 versus $ 23,070 for females. The per capita income was $ 19,804. 10.1 percent of the population and 6.4 percent of families are below the poverty line. 11.7 percent of them are children and young people under 18 years of age and 8.8 percent are 65 years of age or older.
