Lexington is a city in Davidson County in the US state of North Carolina with a population of 20,138 ( 2015 census ). The city area is 45.6 km². The city of Lexington, founded in 1828, is about 30 km south of Winston-Salem , about 90 km northeast of Charlotte and about 160 km west of Raleigh .
Lexington was named in honor of Lexington / Massachusetts , the city where the American Revolutionary War began. Lexington claims to be the " Barbecue Capital of the World". The Lexington Barbecue Festival has been held in Lexington every year since 1984 . In the mid-1990s, the small town had a total of 20 barbecue restaurants and thus had the second highest density of restaurants in the USA after Lexington, Tennessee .
