Albemarle is a city and county seat of Stanly County in the US state of North Carolina .
history
The city of Albemarle was officially incorporated into the state of North Carolina in 1857. It was named after George Monck, 1st Duke of Albemarle , who around 1663 was one of eight English nobles who received land in Carolina from Charles II .
economy
The city began to develop economically early on, with the textile factories in particular making up the largest share. Only in the 1980s and 1990s were other branches of the economy added.
politics
The city is ruled by Mayor Gerald R. Michael. The city government consists of seven members, four of which are elected in constituencies and three by majority vote. The term of office of the mayor is two years, that of the city councilors four years, whereby these are elected in stages.
The city is managed by a city manager . Twelve administrative departments are subordinate to him.
