Henderson County is a county in the state of North Carolina in the United States . The county seat is Hendersonville .
geography
The county is located in western North Carolina, borders South Carolina in the south and has an area of 971 square kilometers, of which 3 square kilometers are water. It is bordered in a clockwise direction by the following counties: Buncombe County , Rutherford County , Polk County, and Transylvania County .
Henderson County is divided into eight townships : Blue Ridge, Clear Creek, Crab Creek, Edneyville, Green River, Hendersonville, Hoopers Creek, and Mills River.
history
Henderson County was formed in 1838 from parts of Buncombe County. It was named, like the district capital Henderson, after Leonard Henderson , a presiding judge at the Supreme Court of North Carolina.
There is a National Historic Site in the county , the Carl Sandburg Home National Historic Site . 35 buildings and sites in the county are registered in the National Register of Historic Places (as of February 21, 2018).

Henderson County's population was 89,173 as of the 2000 census . 1,841 of these people lived in collective accommodation, the other residents lived in 37,414 households and 26,339 families. The population density was 92 inhabitants per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 92.52 percent white, 3.06 percent African American, 0.27 percent Native American, 0.61 percent Asian, 0.02 percent of residents from the Pacific island area and 2.51 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 1.01 percent were descended from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race was 5.47 percent of the population.
Of the 37,414 households, 26.0 percent had children under the age of 18 living with them. 58.6 percent of these were married couples living together, 8.4 percent were single mothers and 29.6 percent were non-families. 25.7 percent were single households and 12.4 percent had people 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.33 and the average family size was 2.78 people.
20.8 percent of the population were under 18 years old. 6.4 percent between 18 and 24 years of age, 26.1 percent between 25 and 44 years of age, 25.1 percent between 45 and 64, and 21.7 percent were 86 years of age or older. The median age was 43 years. For all females there were 93.8 males. For all women aged 18 or over there were 90.5 men.
The median income for a household in the 38,109 US dollars and the median income for a family was $ 44,974. Males had a median income of $ 31,845 versus $ 23,978 for females. The per capita income was $ 21,110. 9.7 percent of the population and 6.8 percent of families are below the poverty line. 14.5 percent of them were children and adolescents under 18 years of age and 8.3 percent were 65 years of age or older.
