Award terms

Obverse of the medal in real colors

The medal could be awarded to all those who had provided assistance with the dike defense, rescue and clearing work on the occasion of the storm surge disaster. The award could also be awarded posthumously. The help was considered fulfilled if it was provided as a personal effort and was related to the storm surge disaster in terms of time and matter. The temporal connection of the mission was recognized until February 23, 1962 at the latest. In principle, the commemorative medal was awarded for a full-day assignment, with a shorter service also being sufficient if this justified the award of the medal according to the nature of the circumstances of the assignment. The medal could also be awarded to people who had been on duty for a fee (police, professional fire brigades, etc.), if these helpers had acted beyond their normal service duties. Anyone who has already received another state award in connection with the storm surge, such as B. had been awarded the Lower Saxony Rescue Medal, could still be honored with the commemorative medal.

Delivery

The medals were presented in the name of the Prime Minister or the bodies authorized by him to the entrusted with the deed of ownership. The medal passed into the property of the borrower. Posthumous awards were given to the bereaved.

Appearance and wearing style

The obverse of the bronze medal , 35 mm in diameter, shows a symbolic representation of a storm surge in the form of waves pouring into the landscape through a broken dam. The reverse shows the state coat of arms of Lower Saxony in the middle and the inscription below: STORMFLUT 16 FEBRUARY 1962 . The medal is worn on the upper left chest of the borrower on a red ribbon. A white vertical central stripe is woven into this approx. 2 mm from the hem on both sides. The strap buckle is of the same quality, but also shows a 10 mm diameter miniature of the lapel of the medal.
