Humphreys County is a county in the state of Tennessee in the United States . The county seat is Waverly .

The county is located northwest of the geographic center of Tennessee and has an area of 1,442 square kilometers, of which 63 square kilometers are water. It is bordered clockwise by the following counties: Houston County , Dickson County , Hickman County , Perry County, and Benton County .
history
Humphreys County was formed on October 18, 1809 from parts of Stewart County. It was named after Parry Wayne Humphreys , a member of the House of Representatives for Tennessee, judge, and member of the 13th United States Congress .
Ten buildings and sites in the county are listed on the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) (as of August 17, 2018).

According to the 2000 census , Humphreys County had 17,929 people in 7,238 households and 5,146 families. The population density was 13 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 95.52 percent white, 2.94 percent African American, 0.27 percent Native American, 0.26 percent Asian, 0.01 percent of residents from the Pacific island area and 0.16 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 0.85 percent were descended from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race was 0.83 percent of the population.
Of the 7,238 households, 30.3 percent had children and adolescents under the age of 18 living with them. 57.3 percent were married couples living together, 10.2 percent were single mothers, and 28.9 percent were non-families. 25.0 percent were single households and 10.6 percent had people aged 65 or over. The average household size was 2.44 and the average household size was 2.90 people.
23.9 percent of the population were under 18 years old, 7.6 percent between 18 and 24, 27.5 percent between 25 and 44, 26.2 percent between 45 and 64 and 14.8 percent were older than 65. The mean age was 39 years. For every 100 females there were statistically 96.8 males and for every 100 females aged 18 and over there were 93.1 males.
The median income for a household in the county is $ 35,786 , and the median income for a family is $ 42,129. Males had a median income of $ 31,657 versus $ 20,736 for females. The per capita income was $ 17,757. 7.6 percent of families and 10.8 percent of the population lived below the poverty line.
