Roane County is a county in the state of Tennessee in the United States . The county seat is Kingston .

The county is located in east-east Tennessee and has an area of ​​1023 square kilometers, of which 88 square kilometers are water. It is bordered clockwise by the following counties: Morgan County , Anderson County , Loudon County , McMinn County , Meigs County, and Cumberland Counties .

history

Roane County was formed on November 6, 1801 from parts of Knox County . It was named after Archibald Roane , a veteran of the American Revolutionary War and later governor of Tennessee.

One place in the county has the status of a National Historic Landmark , the X-10 Reactor, Oak Ridge National Laboratory . 21 buildings and sites in the county are listed on the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) (as of September 1, 2018).

According to the 2000 census , Roane County had 51,910 people in 21,200 households and 15,242 families. The population density was 56 inhabitants per square kilometer.
