Meigs County is a county in the state of Tennessee in the United States . The county seat is Decatur .

The county is located in eastern Tennessee and has an area of ​​561 square kilometers, of which 57 square kilometers are water. It is bordered clockwise by the following counties: Roane County , McMinn County , Bradley County , Hamilton County, and Rhea County .

State Route 58 - north-south thoroughfare that runs roughly halfway through the county and is the only connection to the southernmost part of the county via the Hiwassee River Bridge .

State Route 30 - east-west thoroughfare that goes through Decatur and intersects State Route 58 there. The Tennessee Department of Transportation is upgrading this street to a four-lane road to speed traffic to and from Interstate 75 . The expansion from Decatur to the east was completed in 2008.

State Route 68 - north-south thoroughfare that runs in an east-west direction in the north of the county; it crosses the Tennessee River at Watts Bar Dam .

State Route 60 - the east-west thoroughfare that marks the southern boundary of the county.

State Route 304 - Main Street of Local Importance connecting Ten Mile to County Seat Decatur and providing access to Watts Bar Lake on the northern section .

State Route 305 - Major road of local importance that connects Interstate 75 and State Routes 68 and 58. The road also connects the north-central portion of the county with Athens in neighboring McMinn County.

history

Meigs County was formed from Cherokee Land on January 20, 1836 . According to Aiken and Kane, it was named after Return Jonathan Meigs, Jr. , who was, among other things, judge on the Supreme Court of Ohio , governor of Ohio and post office minister .

White settlers had been operating ferries to cross the Tennessee River from Rhea County since 1807 . Colonel Meigs, a veteran of the American Revolutionary War who would become the county's namesake according to the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP), ran an Indian agency across the river in Rhea County , which was moved east to what is now Meigs County in 1817 . In 1819 the Hiwassee Treaty made it possible for white people to settle in the country, initially as part of Rhea County.

According to the 2000 census , Meigs County had 11,086 people in 4,304 households and 3,262 families. The population density was 22 inhabitants per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 97.65 percent white, 1.24 percent African American, 0.21 percent Native American, 0.18 percent Asian and 0.11 percent from other ethnic groups; 0.60 percent were descended from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race was 0.57 percent of the population.

Of the 4,304 households, 32.8 percent had children and young people under the age of 18 living with them. 61.7 percent were married couples living together, 9.9 percent were single mothers, and 24.2 percent were non-families. 20.8 percent were single households and 7.8 percent had people aged 65 years or over. The average household size was 2.55 and the average household size was 2.94.

25.1 percent of the population were under 18 years old, 8.1 percent between 18 and 24, 28.9 percent between 25 and 44, 26.3 percent between 45 and 64 and 11.5 percent were older than 65. The mean age was 37 years. For every 100 females there were statistically 100.0 males and for every 100 females aged 18 and over there were 97.3 males.

The median income for a household in the 29,354 USD , and the median income for a family was 34,114 USD. Males had a median income of $ 29,521 versus $ 20,419 for females. The per capita income was $ 14,551. 15.8 percent of families and 18.3 percent of the population lived below the poverty line.
