Hancock County is a county in the state of Tennessee in the United States . The county seat is Sneedville .

The county is located in northeast Tennessee, borders Virginia to the north and has an area of 579 square kilometers, of which 3 square kilometers are water. It is bordered by counties in a clockwise direction: Lee County, Virginia, Scott County, Virginia, Hawkins County , Grainger County, and Claiborne Counties .
Localities
history
Hancock County was formed on January 7, 1844 from parts of Claiborne County and Hawkins County. It was named after John Hancock , the first governor of Massachusetts and president of the Continental Congress .

Two structures and sites in the county are listed on the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) (as of August 16, 2018).

As of the 2000 census , Hancock County had 6,786 people in 2,769 households and 1,938 families. The population density was 12 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 97.91 percent white, 0.49 percent African American, 0.24 percent Native American, 0.07 percent Asian, 0.01 percent of residents from the Pacific island area and 0.34 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 0.94 percent were descended from two or more races. 0.37 percent of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.
Of the 2,769 households, 31.0 percent had children and young people under the age of 18 living with them. 55.1 percent were married couples living together, 11.0 percent were single mothers, and 30.0 percent were non-families. 27.7 percent were single households and 13.5 percent had people aged 65 or over. The average household size was 2.39 and the average household size was 2.91 people.
23.1 percent of the population were under 18 years old, 8.8 percent between 18 and 24, 26.9 percent between 25 and 44, 25.5 percent between 45 and 64 and 15.7 percent were older than 65. The mean age was 39 years. For every 100 females there were statistically 95.1 males and for 100 females aged 18 and over there were 94.3 males.
The median income for a household in the county is $ 19,760 , and the median income for a family is $ 25,372. Males had a median income of $ 23,150 versus $ 18,199 for females. The per capita income was $ 11,986. 25.3 percent of families and 29.4 percent of the population lived below the poverty line.
Culture
Hancock County is particularly known for its Melungeon population, who descended from European, African, and Native American ancestors. The Vardy Community School , the only institution that provided schooling for the children of the Melungeons, is now a historic site in the Newmans Ridge area.
