The county is located in southeast Tennessee, borders Georgia to the south and has an area of ​​1,491 square kilometers, of which 86 square kilometers are water. It is bordered clockwise by the following counties: Bledsoe County , Rhea County , Meigs County , Bradley County , Whitfield County, Georgia, Catoosa County (Georgia), Walker County (Georgia), Dade County (Georgia), Marion County, and Sequatchie County .

The county is part of the Chattanooga metropolitan area .

Alexander Hamilton

Hamilton County was formed on October 25, 1819 from parts of Rhea County and Indian land. It was named after Alexander Hamilton , an officer in the American Revolutionary War , member of the Continental Congress , first US Treasury Secretary and one of the founding fathers of the United States.

Historical objects

The historic Walnut Street Bridge is in Chattanooga . Constructed from 1889 to 1891, the bridge is on Walnut Street and spans the Tennessee River . It was listed on February 23, 1990 by the National Register of Historic Places as a historic monument with the number 90000300.

Delta Queen (2003)

Two places in the county have National Historic Landmark status , the Delta Queen paddle steamer and the Moccasin Bend Archeological District . 100 buildings and sites in the county are listed on the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) (as of August 163, 2018).

According to the 2000 census , Hamilton County had 307,896 people in 124,444 households and 83,750 families. The population density was 219 inhabitants per square kilometer.
