The county is located in the south of Mississippi, borders Louisiana and has an area of 1064 square kilometers, of which five square kilometers are water. It is bordered by the following counties and parishes:

Z. Pike

Pike County was formed on December 9, 1815 from parts of Marion County. It was named after Zebulon Pike , a general and explorer.

According to the 2000 census , Pike County had 38,940 people in 14,792 households and 10,502 families. The population density was 37 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 51.25 percent white, 47.53 percent African American, 0.19 percent Native American, 0.33 percent Asian, 0.01 percent of residents from the Pacific island area and 0.20 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 0.50 percent were descended from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any of the above mentioned groups were 0.73 percent of the population.

Of the 14,792 households, 34.2 percent had children under the age of 18 living with them. 46.8 percent were married couples living together, 19.9 percent were single mothers, and 29.0 percent were non-families. 26.5 percent of all households were single households and 12.0 percent had people aged 65 or over. The average household size was 2.57 and the average family size was 3.12.

27.7 percent of the population was under 18 years old, 10.1 percent between 18 and 24, 26.0 percent between 25 and 44, 22.1 percent between 45 and 64 years old, and 14.2 percent were 65 years or older . The median age was 35 years. For every 100 females there were statistically 88.0 males and for every 100 females aged 18 or over there were 83.2 males.
