The county is located in north-central Mississippi and has an area of 1,298 square kilometers, of which nine square kilometers are water. It borders on the following counties:

history

Pontotoc County was formed from Chickasaw land on February 9, 1836 . It was named, like the district capital, after an Indian expression.

Three buildings and sites in the county are listed on the National Register of Historic Places (as of February 2, 2018).

According to the 2000 census , Pontotoc County had 26,726 people in 10,097 households and 7,562 families. The population density was 21 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 84.40 percent white, 13.98 percent African American, 0.27 percent Native American, 0.10 percent Asian, 0.01 percent of residents from the Pacific island area and 0.71 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 0.54 percent were descended from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any of the above mentioned groups were 1.80 percent of the population.

Of the 10,097 households, 37.1 percent had children under the age of 18 living with them. 59.2 percent were married couples living together, 11.9 percent were single mothers, and 25.1 percent were non-families. 22.7 percent of all households were single households and 10.4 percent had people aged 65 or over.
