The Panola County is a county in the US state of Mississippi . The county seats are Batesville and Sardis . This makes Panola County one of the ten counties in Mississippi that have two county administrations.

The county is located in northwest Mississippi, about 45 km to the north from Tennessee , to the west about 40 km from Arkansas and the Mississippi and has an area of 1,826 square kilometers, of which 54 square kilometers are water. It borders on the following counties:

Panola County was formed from Chickasaw land on February 9, 1836 . It was named after the Indian expression for wool .

As of the 2000 census , Panola County had 34,274 people in 12,232 households and 9,014 families. The population density was 19 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 50.48 percent white, 48.36 percent African American, 0.16 percent Native American, 0.18 percent Asian, 0.01 percent of residents from the Pacific island area and 0.41 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 0.39 percent were descended from two or more races. 1.12 percent of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any of the above mentioned groups.
Of the 12,232 households, 36.1 percent had children under the age of 18 living with them. 48.9 percent were married couples living together, 19.9 percent were single mothers, and 26.3 percent were non-families. 23.2 percent of all households were single households and 10.1 percent had people aged 65 years or over. The average household size was 2.75 and the average family size was 3.25.
29.4 percent of the population was under 18 years old, 10.4 percent between 18 and 24, 27.4 percent between 25 and 44, 20.8 percent between 45 and 64 years old, and 12.1 percent were 65 years or older . The median age was 33 years. Statistically, for every 100 females there were 91.8 males and for every 100 females age 18 or over there were 86.5 males.
The average income of a household amounted to 26,785 USD , for a family is 32,675 USD. Males had a median income of $ 27,359 versus $ 19,088 for females. The per capita income was $ 13,075. About 21.2 percent of families and 25.3 percent of the population were below the poverty line .
