The county is located just west of the geographic center of Mississippi and has an area of 1922 square kilometers, of which 64 square kilometers are water. It borders on the following counties:

history
Madison County was formed on January 29, 1828 from parts of Yazoo County. It was named after James Madison (1751-1836), the fourth President of the United States.
As a result of a tornado on the night of November 23rd to 24th 2001, there was severe devastation in Madison County, which reached level F4 on the Fujita scale . At least 18 people were injured.

According to the 2000 census , Madison County had 74,674 people in 27,219 households and 19,325 families. The population density was 40 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 60.29 percent white, 37.48 percent African American, 0.11 percent Native American, 1.30 percent Asian, 0.02 percent of residents from the Pacific island region and 0.27 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 0.53 percent were descended from two or more races. 0.99 percent of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any of the above mentioned groups.
Of the 27,219 households, 37.4 percent had children under the age of 18 living with them. 51.9 percent were married couples living together, 15.6 percent were single mothers, and 29.0 percent were non-families. 25.0 percent of all households were single households and 6.7 percent had people aged 65 or over. The average household size was 2.67 and the average family size 3.23.
28.6 percent of the population was under 18 years old, 8.9 percent between 18 and 24, 32.4 percent between 25 and 44, 20.3 percent between 45 and 64 years old, and 9.7 percent were 65 years or older . The median age was 33 years. For every 100 females there were statistically 90.2 males and for every 100 females age 18 or over there were 86.2 males.
The average income of a household amounted to 46,970 USD , for a family is 58,172 USD. Males had a median income of $ 41,460 versus $ 29,170 for females. The per capita income was $ 23,469. About 10.6 percent of families and 14.0 percent of the population lived below the poverty line .
