The Wilkinson County is a county in the US state of Mississippi . The county seat is Woodville .

The county is located in the extreme southwest of Mississippi, borders Louisiana to the west and south and has an area of 1781 square kilometers, of which 28 square kilometers are water. It is bordered by the following counties and parishes:

history
Wilkinson County was formed on January 30, 1802 from parts of Adams County. It was named after James Wilkinson (1757-1825), an American politician, governor of the Louisiana Territory , officer in the American War of Independence and general in the British-American War of 1812.

According to the 2000 census , Wilkinson County had 10,312 people in 3,578 households and 2,511 families. The population density was 6 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 31.22 percent white, 68.21 percent African American, 0.10 percent Native American, 0.03 percent Asian and 0.07 percent from other ethnic groups; 0.38 percent were descended from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any of the above mentioned groups were 0.44 percent of the population.
Of the 3,578 households, 32.9 percent had children under the age of 18 living with them. 40.4 percent were married couples living together, 24.5 percent were single mothers, and 29.8 percent were non-families. 27.9 percent of all households were single households and 12.0 percent had people aged 65 or over. The average household size was 2.59 and the average family size was 3.16.
25.8 percent of the population was under 18 years old, 10.7 percent between 18 and 24, 29.0 percent between 25 and 44, 20.6 percent between 45 and 64 years old, and 13.9 percent were 65 years or older . The median age was 35 years. Statistically, there were 108.0 males for every 100 females and 106.6 males for every 100 females aged 18 or over.
The average income of a household amounted to 18,929 USD , for a family is 23,447 USD. Males had a median income of $ 24,509 versus $ 16,088 for females. The per capita income was $ 10,868. About 33.1 percent of families and 37.7 percent of the population lived below the poverty line.
