The city was named after Ella De Ridder , sister-in-law of the railway magnate Jan De Goeijen .

The first house in what would later become the town was built in 1893. Railway construction began in the area in 1896 and the first trains started running two years later. The town, which developed from a settlement for railway construction workers, was incorporated as an independent municipality in 1903.
