DeRidder is located in western Louisiana, about 25 kilometers east of the border with Texas forming the Sabine River . The geographical coordinates of DeRidder are 30 ° 50'47 "north latitude and 93 ° 17'21" west longitude. The urban area extends over an area of 22 km².

A Kansas City Southern railroad runs through DeRidder . A section of the Timber Rock Railroad , a Class III railway company belonging to the Watco Companies , branches off to the west from here.
With the Beauregard Regional Airport there is a small airfield on the western outskirts. The nearest major airports are Louis Armstrong New Orleans International Airport (348 km east-southeast) and the George Bush Intercontinental Airport in Houston (254 km west-southwest).

The city was named after Ella De Ridder , sister-in-law of the railway magnate Jan De Goeijen .
The first house in what would later become the town was built in 1893. Railway construction began in the area in 1896 and the first trains started running two years later. The town, which developed from a settlement for railway construction workers, was incorporated as an independent municipality in 1903.

According to the 2010 census , DeRidder had 10,578 people in 4,161 households. The population density was 480.8 people per square kilometer. Statistically, there were 2.46 people each in the 4,161 households.
The racial the population was composed of 59.6 percent white, 33.4 percent African American, 0.9 percent Native American, 1.5 percent Asian, 0.1 percent Polynesian and 1.0 percent from other ethnic groups; 3.5 percent were descended from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race was 4.5 percent of the population.
26.6 percent of the population were under 18 years old, 59.6 percent were between 18 and 64 and 13.8 percent were 65 years or older. 52.3 percent of the population was female.
