Colfax is a Founded in 1869, town and county seat of Grant Parish in US -amerikanischen State Louisiana . In 2000, Cofax had 1,659 residents; according to the official estimate, the population remained relatively stable in 2009 at 1,668.
The name goes back to the Vice President of the United States, Schuyler Colfax .
On April 13, 1873, the Colfax massacre took place here. Armed racist whites overpowered released slaves and black vigilante groups and murdered the prisoners. White prisoners were not injured. Between 62 and 81 people are said to have been murdered. Because of this, federal troops were stationed here until 1877.
