John Jewel
John Jewel (born May 22, 1522 in Buden , Devonshire , † September 23, 1571 in Moktonfarley ) was Bishop of Salisbury and defender of the Church of England .
Life
Jewel studied at Merton College , Oxford and was a leader in the reforms under King Edward VI. involved; he had to leave England when Mary I Tudor ascended the throne . The years of exile cooled his zeal, and when he returned under Elizabeth I Tudor , he made a name for himself as a defender of the established church. In 1560 Jewel became Bishop of Salisbury, and in 1562 he published The Apology of the English Church , in which he upheld the doctrine of divine royalty. He did not recognize the authority of the Council of Trent and defended Protestantism . His book was well received by Queen Elizabeth I of England and was considered the official position of the Church of England .
