Krotz Springs is a town in St. Landry Parish , Louisiana , on the Atchafalaya River . In 2000 the place had 1219 inhabitants, Krotz Springs belongs to the Opelousas - Eunice Micropolitan Statistical Area .

history

Around the turn of the century to the 20th century CW Krotz, a man from purchased Ohio , 20,000 acres (about 8,100  hectares ) of woodland in the Atchafalaya Basin and built a sawmill , where the felled trees were cut in the marshes. The small settlement around the sawmill developed and was named Latania (after the French expression for fan palm , after which the bayou of the same name is named and after the species of palm that grow in the area).

Krotz believed that there was a deposit of crude oil under his land and therefore carried out the first oil well in St. Landry Parish , but he encountered drinking water instead of crude oil. The spring that gave the place its name was used to supply drinking water to the developing small town. Krotz also had the water bottled and sold it elsewhere.

In 1900 a post office was set up in the city; this was named Krotz Springs.

During the tenure of Sheriff Cat Doucet (he was Sheriff des Parishs 1936–1940 and 1952–1968), Krotz Springs was a center for gambling and prostitution that flourished in the establishments on US Highway 190 .

The population of Krotz Springs consisted of 99.10% white , 0.25% black or African American , 0.08% Native American , 0% Asian , 0% Pacific Islander , 0.08% said to be of other races and 0.49% named two or more races. 0.74% of the population declared to be Hispanic or Latino of any race.

The residents of Krotz Springs distributed to 490 households out of which 34.9% were living in children under 18 years of age. 52.4% of households were married, 11.8% had a female head of household without a husband, and 30.8% were not families. 26.9% of households were made up of individuals and someone lived in 12.9% of all households aged 65 years or older.
