Clay Knobloch
Henry Clay Knobloch (born November 25, 1839 - May 19, 1903 in Thibodaux , Louisiana ) was an American politician . Between 1884 and 1888 he was lieutenant governor of the state of Louisiana.
Career
Nothing is known about Clay Knobloch's youth and schooling. After studying law and being admitted to the bar, he began working in this profession in Thibodaux. During the Civil War he served in the Confederation Army . Politically, he joined the Democratic Party .
In 1884 Knobloch was elected lieutenant governor of Louisiana alongside Samuel D. McEnery . He held this office between 1884 and 1888. He was Deputy Governor and Chairman of the State Senate . In 1888 he sought his re-election, but was defeated in the primary elections of his party. He then accused State Senator E.A. O'Sullivan of being responsible for his defeat. The two politicians fell out and there was almost a duel in 1889 , which was then canceled at the last moment. On May 19, 1903, Clay Knobloch was shot in his hometown of Thibodaux by a hairdresser named James Cherault in alleged self-defense.
