J. Emile Verret

J. Emile Verret (born September 13, 1885 in Iberia Parish , Louisiana , †  February 9, 1965 ) was an American politician . Between 1944 and 1948 he was lieutenant governor of the state of Louisiana.

Career

Emile Verret attended the public schools in his home country. In 1905 he graduated from the Southwestern Louisiana Industrial Institute , now the University of Louisiana at Lafayette . He also studied at the Soule Business College in New Orleans . He then ran a department store in New Iberia . From 1928 he was also active in the insurance industry. Politically, he joined the Democratic Party . Between 1914 and 1943 he served as the president of the school board at Iberia Parish.

In 1944 Verret was elected lieutenant governor of Louisiana alongside Jimmie Davis . He held this office between 1944 and 1948. He was Deputy Governor and Chairman of the State Senate . In the primaries, he had surprisingly beaten the favored Earl Long . In 1948 he was not re-elected. Verret was a member of several organizations and associations. He died on February 9, 1965.
