Melinda Schwegmann

Melinda B. Schwegmann (born October 25, 1946 in Austin , Texas ) is an American politician . She was lieutenant governor of the state of Louisiana from 1992 to 1996 .

Career

Melinda Schwegmann initially worked as a teacher and in the real estate industry. She studied at Louisiana State University in Baton Rouge and at the University of New Orleans . Politically, she initially joined the Democratic Party . She was chairman of an organization for animal welfare ( Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals ). She was also a board member of the Schwegmann Giant Supermarket Chain , a supermarket chain of her husband's family.

In 1991, Schwegmann was elected lieutenant governor of Louisiana alongside Edwin Edwards . She held this office between 1992 and 1996. She was Deputy Governor . During this time she was mainly responsible for the fields of culture and tourism. In 1995, she ran unsuccessfully for governor. She was then elected to the Louisiana House of Representatives, where she remained from 1997 to 2004. During this time she campaigned for more rights for homosexuals. In 2003 she moved to the Republicans . In the same year she tried unsuccessfully to return to the office of lieutenant governor. Melinda Schwegmann is married and has three children.
