Jimmy Fitzmorris

James Edward "Jimmy" Fitzmorris Jr. (born November 15, 1921 in New Orleans , Louisiana ) is a former American politician . Between 1972 and 1980 he was lieutenant governor of the state of Louisiana.

Career

Jimmy Fitzmorris graduated from Jesuit High School in New Orleans. In 1940 he began working as a news boy for the Kansas City Southern Railroad Company (KCS). Between 1942 and 1945 he served in the US Army during World War II , where he rose to major. He began studying at Loyola University , but did not finish it. In 1946 he returned to the KCS, where he rose to the position of vice president in administration. He is still one of the company's consultants to this day. Politically, he joined the Democratic Party . Between 1954 and 1966 he was a member of the New Orleans City Council. In 1965 and 1969 he ran unsuccessfully for the office of mayor there.

In 1971 Fitzmorris was elected lieutenant governor of Louisiana alongside Edwin Edwards . He held this post after re-election between 1972 and 1980. He was Deputy Governor and until 1974 Chairman of the State Senate . After a constitutional reform in 1974, the personal union between the Vice-Governor and the Senate President was abolished. Since then, the Senate has elected its own president independently of the lieutenant governor. In 1979 Fitzmorris failed in his party's gubernatorial election. Then he sued unsuccessfully against the outcome of this area code. Four years later, in November 1983, he was defeated in the elections for his old office of lieutenant governor. He has a daughter with his wife Gloria Lopez Fitzmorris, who died in 1995.
