Bobby Freeman (politician)

Robert Louis "Bobby" Freeman (born April 27, 1934 in Plaquemine , Louisiana ; † May 16, 2016 ibid) was an American politician . Between 1980 and 1988 he was lieutenant governor of the state of Louisiana.

Career

In 1952, Robert Freeman graduated from Plaquemine Senior High School . He then studied at Louisiana State University in Baton Rouge . Between 1956 and 1959 he served in the US Army ; in 1960 and 1961 he worked for a chemical company. After studying law at Loyola University in New Orleans and being admitted to the bar in 1965, he began working in this profession in a law firm in Plaquemine . He became a member of the Louisiana State and United States Bar Associations. Politically, he joined the Democratic Party . Between 1968 and 1980 he was a member of the Louisiana House of Representatives .

In 1979 Freeman was elected lieutenant governor of Louisiana. He was then deputy to Republican Governor David C. Treen . Since 1984, he served after re-election under the new Governor Edwin Edwards . Freeman got on very badly with Governor Treen and there were frequent arguments between the two politicians. In 1988 Freeman failed in his party's primary election for the US House of Representatives . Between 1990 and 1996 he was a municipal judge in Plaquemine.
