Plaquemine is a city with the status of City and the seat of the county seat in Iberville Parish in the US state of Louisiana with 7046 inhabitants (2013).
geography
Plaquemine is on the west bank of the Mississippi River and 20 kilometers south of central Baton Rouge . The Louisiana Highway 1 runs through the middle of Plaquemine.
history
Native of the area were the Chitimacha -Indianer that the place Plakemine called, which in their language " Kaki (English:" persimmon ) and is referred to the fruit of this plant in the area. French settlers who settled there from 1775 translated the word into Plaquemine . The persimmon fruit is still called Plaqueminier in French today .
In the mid-1800s, Plaquemine developed into a major trading center due to its convenient location on the Mississippi River. The dominant industries were the fishing, timber, oil and gas industries as well as the harvest of persimmon fruits. Since 1835 the place has been the administrative seat of the Iberville Parish. In the 20th century , Dow Chemical, a petrochemical company, opened a manufacturing facility that is still one of the city's main employers today.
Many historically valuable buildings, such as the Iberville Parish Courthouse and St Louis Plantation, are on the list of entries on the National Register of Historic Places in Iberville Parish .
