Alvin Olin King
Alvin Olin King (born June 21, 1890 in Leoti , Wichita County , Kansas , † January 21, 1958 in Lake Charles , Louisiana ) was an American politician and in 1932 governor of the state of Louisiana.
Early years and political advancement
Alvin King attended Lake Charles High School , Parsons Business College, and Tulane University , where he studied law until 1915. Then he began to practice in his new profession. King became a member of the Democratic Party when he was elected to the Louisiana Senate in 1924 . In 1930 he became president of this body.
Louisiana Governor
Since 1928, Huey Pierce Long was governor and Paul N. Cyr was lieutenant governor of Louisiana. After Long was elected to the US Senate , the discussion about his successor as governor flared up. Actually this office would have been granted to the lieutenant governor; But in the meantime he had fallen out with Long. After Long's election to the Senate, even before Long took office in Washington , Cyr had expressed the opinion that the election of Long ended his mandate as governor and that he, Cyr, had to take over his office immediately. Long was angry because he wanted to remain in office as governor until he took office in Washington. With the help of his great influence in the party, he now operated the deposition of Cyr as lieutenant governor. He accused this fraud and forced him to resign.
With this, Senate President King became the new Lieutenant Governor and after the actual move from Long to the US Senate, Alvin King became Governor of Louisiana on January 25, 1932. In this capacity he only had to end Long's term of office, which expired on May 16 of the same year. In that short time, King has continued the policies of his predecessor.
