Charles Étienne Arthur Gayarré (born January 9, 1805 in New Orleans , † February 11, 1895 ) was a French American ( Creole ) lawyer , judge , politician , historian and writer in the US state of Louisiana .

Life

Born on the Boré plantation as the grandson of Étienne de Boré - New Orleans' first mayor - he studied law in Philadelphia and returned to New Orleans in 1829 to open a law firm. His career began in 1830 when he was elected to the Louisiana House of Representatives . He was also called to the office of the Louisian Senator in Washington, DC , but instead became a New Orleans district attorney or judge. From 1845 to 1852 he held the office of Secretary of State of Louisiana. During the civil war (1861-1865) he campaigned in France in vain for an alliance with the southern states .

His most important work is the four-volume Histoire de la Louisiane (1854–66), as well as numerous works on Spanish history and politics.

Gayarre was considered a pioneer of Panlatinism .
