Chile Pepper Institute

The Chile Pepper Institute Center for Chile Education (short Chile Pepper Institute ) is an at New Mexico State University (NMSU) in Las Cruces located somewhere Research Institute. It was founded in 1992 and is dedicated to teaching, research and knowledge archiving of the plant genus Paprika ( Capsicum ); especially the hot variety Capsicum chinense .

The institute is subordinate to the "College of Agriculture and Home Economics" and is headed by Paul Bosland .

The breeding of paprika varieties has been practiced at the NMSU since 1888, initially under the direction of Fabian Garcia . In 1913 he bred the variety “New Mexico No. 9 “the first own variety of the NMSU, the valid publication of the description of the variety did not take place until 1921. It is the basis of all chilli varieties of the type“ New Mexican Chili ”available today.

A 1998 survey of chili-growing farmers in New Mexico found that approximately 50 percent of the state's chili acreage was planted with strains bred at the NMSU.

Honourings and prices

The chilli variety ' NuMex Big Jim ', introduced in 1975, was entered in the Guinness Book of Records as the longest chilli in the world with a confirmed length of 13.5 inches (approx. 34.5 cm) . The director of the Paul Bosland Institute received the Ig Nobel Prize in 1999 for breeding the completely spicy jalapeño variety 'NuMex Primavera' .
