NuMex Big Jim is a pepper variety of the species Capsicum annuum that was bred at New Mexico State University . The variety has an entry in the Guinness Book of Records as the longest chili variety in the world.

description

Compared to the fruits, the plants of the NuMex Big Jim variety are relatively small with only 60 to 90 cm in height. Up to 30 fruits with a heat of 500 to 2500 SHU can hang on a plant . The fruits are on average 19.5 cm long, 4.8 cm thick and ripen to red. Older, green fruits are slightly flattened, they form a round "shoulder" around the stalk, the tip is occasionally bent. A locally concentrated fruit set makes it difficult to harvest the fruit by machine. The average yield in professional cultivation is around 35,500 kg per hectare.

History and records

The breeding of chilli varieties of the "New Mexican" fruit type at New Mexico State University began in 1888 by Fabian Garcia. Since then, a large number of other similar varieties have been bred in addition to the NuMex Big Jim. However, since all varieties of the New Mexican State University carry the prefix "NuMex", the New Mexican varieties soon began to be called Anaheim.

The NuMex Big Jim variety was introduced in 1975, it was bred by Dr. Nakayama. With a confirmed length of 13.5 inches (approx. 34.5 cm) NuMex Big Jim has an entry in the Guinness Book of Records as the longest chilli variety.

In 2007, an international competition was held under the name “Big Jim Challenge” to find the largest harvested fruit of the variety. The winning chili reached a length of 32.7 cm.
