The Springfield Armor are a former basketball franchise from Springfield , Massachusetts that played in the NBA Development League . The team played their home games in the MassMutual Center . The team was owned by HWS Basketball, LLC until 2014, owned by Michael Savit. This also includes four minor league baseball teams: the Mobile BayBears, the Modesto Nuts, the Mahoning Valley Scrappers, and Columbia Blowship. For the 2011/12 season they became the exclusive farm team of the Brooklyn Nets (known at the time as the New Jersey Nets).

Since basketball was invented in Springfield, the city is also known as the Birthplace of Basketball (German birthplace of basketball ).

The team's name comes from the Springfield Armory , which was founded by George Washington in 1777 . On June 30, 2009, the team officially announced their logo and name.

In the 2011/12 D-League season, the team managed to take part in the play-offs for the first time in team history , where they had to admit defeat to the Canton Charge in the first round .

In April 2014, the league announced that the Springfield Armor had been sold to the SSJ Group under majority owner Steve Jbara and would be relocated to Grand Rapids for the 2014/15 season . There the team will act as the exclusive D-League team for the Detroit Pistons . A new name for the team has not yet been announced at this time. Until then, it will act as the Grand Rapids NBA D-League team.

On June 17, 2014, the D-League and the team announced the new name and team logo, since then the "Grand Rapids NBA D-League Team" has been renamed Grand Rapids Drive .
