Geographical description

The approximately 22 km long river drains an area of almost 100 km 2 , mainly rugged and predominantly forested mountain regions, in particular of the Corsica Regional Nature Park . While the 10 km long lower course is called “Solenzara”, the sections of the upper course also have various other names. To the southeast of the peaks of the Bavella massif and north of the Col de Bavella mountain pass (1218 m), the Solenzara rises at an altitude of around 1120 m, initially as the Ruisseau de Bavella , in the area of the municipality of Quenza . This is followed by gorges with a steep gradient - as well as small waterfalls, pools and blocks - the sections of the Ruisseau du Renaju (from around 800 m altitude) and the Ruisseau de la Vacca (from around 400 m altitude), which is around 1 km Above a road bridge (the D 268) reaches the department border. From there (about 130 m height) the Solenzara forms the border river to its confluence on the east coast of Corsica into the Mediterranean .
