The current building is the third courthouse in Plymouth County, founded in 1851. The first courthouse was built in 1859 in the now defunct Melbourne settlement. Today's courthouse is a three-story red sandstone building built in 1902 according to a design by the Kinney & Detweiler architecture firm in the Beaux Arts style . An earlier dome and clock tower were removed during a renovation in 1932.

In 1981 the building was added to the National Register of Historic Places with reference number 81000263 .
