The Mitchell County is a county in the US state of Iowa . At the 2010 census , the county had 10,776 people and a population density of 8.9 people per square kilometer. The county seat is Osage , named after Orrin Sage, an early patron of the city.

The county is located in northeast Iowa, borders Minnesota to the north and covers an area of 1,216 square kilometers, one square kilometer of which is water. It borders on the following neighboring counties:

history
Mitchell County was formed in 1851 from former parts of Chickasaw County. It was named after John Mitchel (1815–1875), an Irish patriot.
