Origin of name
The place is named after Esther A. Ridley, who was one of the first white female settlers in the area.

In the late afternoon of May 10, 1879, the fall of a meteorite, presumably weighing 320 kg, was observed near the city ( 43 ° 25 ′ 0 ″ N , 94 ° 50 ′ 0 ″ W ). It broke into two large, 195 kg and 65 kg, as well as several smaller parts with the sound of an explosion that could be heard from far away. The peculiarity of the find listed in the Meteoritical Bulletin Database as Estherville meteorite is on the one hand its rare composition, which is called mesosiderite , and on the other hand that it is the most massive of only seven observed mesosiderite falls. Estherville is also the type locality (first location) for the minerals stanfieldite and tetrataenite discovered in it .
